Background of the destination (Kalpitiya)


Kalpitiya is a costal town located in western region of Puttlam district. The Kalpitiya peninsula consists of total fourteen islands that are a crown for its stunning natural beauty.kalpitiya a placed in between Puttlam lagoon and the glorious Indian ocean make for a place of remarkable beauty.The people of kalpitiya are mostly fisherman .

Kalpitiya was one of the 15 sites for the improvement of the tourism industry  in SriLanka as a strategic move to  boost the  tourism industry and  the country 's revenue .The goverment accquired around 4000 acres of land with the project's initiation around 2004.

The history of Kalpitiya was associated with maritime trade and it was first colonized by the portugees in early 17th century .Now a days it is a famous tourist destination for kite surfing and whale and Dolphin watching.

    Kalpitiya is best known as the best kitesurfing destination in Sri Lanka, attracting enthusiasts of all levels to test the winds on an exciting lagoon expedition. Besides Kalpitiya is a destination worth visiting for a variety of reasons, including dolphin watching, water sports, and a cozy and comfortable stay. A magnificent location that should not be missed.

  Due to the massive tourisam development project implimented for Kalpitiya ,the locals are in a fear of loosing their lands.People over here use to lead a very simple lifestyle which is bonded with the sea.whenever the sea washed their huts away,they used  to simply move futher inland and started their day today lifestyle . At that time there  were no barriers to use the land and they used it as they wish.But now the senario is changed.The land has taken over for a goverment tourisam project and fence erected and gates locked for them. What make this paradise unique is its  Spinner dolphins and sperm whales ,which is rare spices.It is a marine sanctuary that keeps all the aquatic life active there.The fishing community is what keeps Kalpitiya moving.The tropical climate of the island makes them prefect for sunbathing .Even though there are  more enough to attract people Kalpitiya is still a hidden gem . What is (KITRP)?

  Fourteen islands in the Kalpitiya peninsula have been identified for the Kalpitiya Integrated Tourism Resort Project (KITRP), which is one of the most extensive project undertaken in the country to generate environmental friendly sustainable tourism . This project planned to build 6000 acomadation units,a domestic airport (Uchchimunai),underwater theme park(Kandakkuliya),cable cars,speed boat safaris,hot air balloon facilities and agricultural and livestock farms.
