Do the locals really happy with the Kalpitiya tourisam project ?

 



Due to the massive tourisam development project implimented for Kalpitiya ,the locals are in a fear of loosing their lands.People over here use to lead a very simple lifestyle which is bonded with the sea.whenever the sea washed their huts away,they used  to simply move futher inland and started their day today lifestyle .
At that time there  were no barriers to use the land and they used it as they wish.But now the senario is changed.The land has taken over for a goverment tourisam project and fence erected and gates locked for them.


More and more island is being sequestered and acess denied ,thereby putting villagers homes and livehoods at risk.Their rights under the reaf and their peace of mind in jeopardy and yet the people themselves appear to have little say in the matter and feel that they have no one to help them.

What is (KITRP)?

  Fourteen islands in the Kalpitiya peninsula have been identified for the Kalpitiya Integrated Tourism Resort Project (KITRP), which is one of the most extensive project undertaken in the country to generate environmental friendly sustainable tourism . This project planned to build 6000 acomadation units,a domestic airport (Uchchimunai),underwater theme park(Kandakkuliya),cable cars,speed boat safaris,hot air balloon facilities and agricultural and livestock farms.
